EVENT OVERVIEW
Machine Learning has the potential to revolutionise healthcare. For example, through advanced screening to catch disease early, increased efficiency to free up doctor time and the capability to offer personalised treatment plans for quicker recovery. However, there should be concern on applying machine learning methods blindly. In this event we will focus on machine learning approaches in medicine and best-practice approaches.
The event takes place over two weeks at the University of Bath.
Week 1 (24th June 2025 – 27th June 2025) is a summer school aimed at PhD students and early career researchers with 4 mini-lecture series on Deep Learning and Applications, Bayesian Statistics and Uncertainty Quantification, Optimal Transport, and Medical Imaging. Also in Week 1 we have short group research projects from industry. Results from these projects will be presented in Week 2.
Week 2 (30th June 2025 – 4th July 2025) is a conference focusing on the latest applications, methods, theory and best-practice on mathematical approaches in medicine. The event will include research talks, a poster session and spotlight talks. There will also be a conference dinner on the Wednesday.
Mini-School Courses (Week 1)
Short courses will be given by the following academics (exact course subject to change):
- Michael Unser (EPFL), Deep Learning and Applications
- Marcelo Pereyra (Heriot Watt), Bayesian Statistics and Uncertainty Quantification
- Bernhard Schmitzer (Goettingen), Optimal Transport
- Jean Feydy (INRIA), Medical Imaging
Industrial Contributors (Week 1)
Industrial contributors for the Week 1 group research projects will appear here soon.
Application For Support
The form to apply for support for students and early career researchers will appear here soon. The deadline for applying is the 5th January 2025. We expect to be able to notify successful applicants in mid-late January.
Registration
Registration and fees will appear here in late January.
Programme
The schedule for the summer school in Week 1 and the conference in Week 2 can be found here as soon as they are available.
Lecture notes/slides will be posted here with the agreement of the speakers.
Venue
The events will be held at the University of Bath and both weeks will be held in the Wolfson Lecture Theatre (4W1.7).
Travel
The nearest airports to Bath are Bristol (BRS) and London Heathrow (LHR). Other London airports are also within reach. There are regular trains from London Paddington to Bath Spa that take about 1h20min. A bus shuttle is available from Bristol Airport to Bath, which takes about 1h.
Accommodation
Accommodation for invited participants will be arranged and details sent directly. Other than university-owned accommodation there is not a lot of options around the university itself. Often the best solution is to look in the centre of Bath.
Meals
Lunches will be provided. There aren’t many options on campus for dinner and so the usual option is to go to the centre of Bath. There will be a conference dinner in Week 2. More details will be posted here in the future.
General Information
Bath is a beautiful Georgian town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are a number of things to do and see, for example the Roman Baths. There is likely to be an organised outing (possibly to Stonehenge) after Week 2 for those who are staying on for the Maths4DL conference the following week. More information on attractions can be found here.
